My Grandpapa lives in a wonderful house
! I% n+ B8 {$ a" S With a great many windows and doors,
* @" u- r- j3 R1 o/ O There are stairs that go up, and stairs that go down,5 D2 ?* g; N% C5 {
And such beautiful, slippery floors.: ^& {, o. h& Z5 Z/ J: e" J
But of all of the rooms, even mother's and mine,
9 c, g$ J* s5 ]3 f And the bookroom, and parlour and all,. u' o6 t6 E) ~" r$ {
I like the green dining-room so much the best. p/ }6 J) B* j* D9 [
Because of its ceiling and wall.
5 H# a. M6 L2 J% M" K" t- U Right over your head is a funny round hole/ e: L8 z: C8 n( S/ p5 v8 G
With apples and pears falling through;
8 ]; X2 \3 i0 W. J There's a big bunch of grapes all purply and sweet,2 z' Y( i9 V) D
And melons and pineapples too.! w; G( U8 j) s0 H% x
They tumble and tumble, but never come down
6 l( n2 _' m! O Though I've stood underneath a long while% \9 a+ s/ U8 e; I7 l' l
With my mouth open wide, for I always have hoped5 x( ^1 C$ G5 \) X- G: S' R
Just a cherry would drop from the pile.4 h! k" `# x. D+ G' i7 h
No matter how early I run there to look3 a9 O6 ]+ L+ r6 _3 X9 R: y! u8 |
It has always begun to fall through;
" q2 ~; b0 e8 s2 ^! H. Y3 b- L3 A And one night when at bedtime I crept in to see,
! {, c! w% c" r9 q7 S/ w/ x5 ?. l It was falling by candle-light too.
5 d* ?2 w! b& E) R: y% p. P I am sure they are magical fruits, and each one( `1 O1 n0 Z, [# _( j
Makes you hear things, or see things, or go1 |2 O' i/ p+ ?' V
Forever invisible; but it's no use,
$ c9 l# e6 }5 d* T And of course I shall just never know.% q9 c9 @# T- z1 g' G
For the ladder's too heavy to lift, and the chairs
8 a9 X+ e( |$ t( F! P Are not nearly so tall as I need.
! U7 e# \, ?6 x' w I've given up hope, and I feel I shall die+ }, K7 i$ {0 P
Without having accomplished the deed.5 w% c1 `9 w- I8 C& k3 w* z4 Z- ~5 ~
It's a little bit sad, when you seem very near
/ g1 O3 L5 M6 p/ ^! W To adventures and things of that sort,
+ H' @2 ^* h: m; X: G+ V* E" C" @1 K Which nearly begin, and then don't; and you know
9 d4 o- A5 h8 R* _1 X! P0 `! m7 n It is only because you are short.
