Builded its pictures. There before our eyes

Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed,# _, C+ v1 x% I5 J

Divided where there peered a laughing face.5 ]1 w, A) k0 Y7 L. g
The foliage seemed to rustle in the wind,

Its sober squares of black and white were hid
2 h; G! `2 }) E. s+ [6 s Y1 i Beneath a restless, shuffling, wide-eyed mob

A sudden blare of trumpets, and the throng0 e7 u. J3 T# Y6 P0 i: z9 a; j: w
About the entrance parted as the guests
2 Q: k/ _; a9 s Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.
4 E3 i$ o/ F2 S* L# ] Our eager fancies noted all they brought,
7 O) ?8 t# J6 T9 w0 u The glorious, unattainable delights!5 C# ^5 K" R' |/ v# u
But always there was one unbidden guest
0 B7 Z ?' u8 ]- w0 r" W3 e Who cursed the child and left it bitterness.: |# Q$ [ `; y+ ~' h7 U8 p
The fire falls asunder, all is changed,6 u1 r: ^* C( H0 A
I am no more a child, and what I see9 q: r( K* s/ T, J
Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.

/ i8 @* ^6 d' N' Z The gifts are there, the many pleasant things:
: j; i: H6 v, i/ }, ^: H Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name

. K0 Q) M4 C7 G9 M0 V3 ]$ u Of making words obedient. This is much;
" Z: ?& g% z% o; m- ^ But overshadowing all is still the curse,
4 e+ c- I/ \3 V/ v% z3 } That never shall I be fulfilled by love!% v }0 e$ B3 x1 V0 ?1 O
Along the parching highroad of the world2 s( Z! W; `8 c0 K
No other soul shall bear mine company.# f2 k) x) N- g( E( m0 U, i* i3 u3 M
Always shall I be teased with semblances,
& R5 Y" z; N5 v With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile7 l+ k' J, H. d/ G$ L1 u& Q
Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy
0 G, I1 W) ~1 z Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering
$ B7 {$ R- P3 A `6 ? Strews all the ground about with coloured sherds., }4 H( x" e# {. b2 d5 u/ G" [/ {
So I behold my visions on the ground
. k8 k0 j$ X, Z4 v& \* D/ x No longer radiant, an ignoble heap
1 W' A8 K1 S; V% ?- R Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,
- A; v1 E6 |& Z2 r% N Even by hope or faith, my dragging steps4 b0 f8 v6 @8 o0 d0 J8 k" n3 D
Force me forever through the passing days.
