　　However mean your life is, meet it and live it;
　　do not shun it and call it hard names.
　　It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest

$ y4 P* e2 r6 x+ P* M　　find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is.
　　You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling,
% E. \- v) K. o. ^: s" @. o　　glorious hours, even in a poor house. The setting sun
7 b2 x( E# o1 l2 R/ i, _/ d: S　　is reflected from the windows of the almshouse
8 a, ?& I& g5 d; R2 D& p& B0 d& W　　as brightly as from the rich man’s abode;
) o4 o* I1 ?) G6 }) i$ I2 g　　the snow melts before its door as early in the spring.
8 q$ a4 ~  x- k7 V9 ?9 i2 y9 X　　I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there,
　　and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.
　　The town’s poor seem to me often to live
　　the most independent lives of any. Maybe they are simply
' c& T. a0 f  l+ l) C　　great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that
　　they are above being supported by the town;
2 d/ c- s& _' M( `　　but it often happens that they are not above
　　supporting themselves by dishonest means,
　　which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty
* Z$ ?+ r/ n- `1 N( O1 A! X　　like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much
　　to get new things, whether clothes or friends.
( u; ~9 M% X6 ^( Z( ?& P4 a　　Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change.
　　Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts.
